Hamakawa closed

Tried to go last night and thought I had the wrong place as the windows were covered up and definitely closed. There's a sign up indicating a change of ownership. Anyone know what happened?

  1. Are you referring to Yamakawa in Toluca Lake on Riverside Drive?
It has been sold and will be converted to Sushi Yamakawa, owned by the Taiko sushi people on Franklin in Hollywood or New Japan in WLA. Not sure of the dates, but...

Long story. Mrs. Yamakawa took over the business after the death of her husband. she was not a restaurant professional, and relied on one chef who had taught her husband the business. He moved on, and Mrs. Y. had personnel probs. Hired him back, but he quit again to take care of family matters in Japan. Mrs Y. has family concerns, too, and decided not to continue in business. (I have this from an acquaintance of Mrs. Y.)

Addendum: Yamakawa won't change hands for a few weeks. Still open. Only staff changes so far is waitresses. Sort of a coincidence that two places with similar names are being sold around the same time.
