Catch in Casa del Mar Hotel?
Has anyone been to this relatively new restaurant in the Casa del Mar on Ocean in Santa Monica? The menu looks good, but I'm always a little wary of goint to dinner at a hotel restaurant. Any thoughts?
I had dinner there last night. And, I usually subscribe to the no Sushi on a Monday rule, but I wasn't buying. So, what the heck. The place was empty at around 8 PM. I was at a business dinner, just utterly bored. I kept thinking to myself... "Is Capo open on a Monday?".
Mind you, it's a new place, but I still expected a lot. We went just for sushi, and while I cruised the menu, I don't recall anything fascinating.
The sushi itself was very mediocre. I'd have to put Catch in the same caliber as Katana for sushi.
One thing that bothered me was that my table for some reason smelled like pee.
The service was horrible. And, the bill came out to $115 for 2, and that's with one glass of wine.
After for dessert, we sat in the lounge and had the chocolate cake. Now, that's something to write home about. It was $12 for goodness sakes, and it was made in house.
I actually prefer Sushi King or Sushi Tenn over this Catch place.
Thank you for the review. Now I know to stay away from the sushi. I've had lunch there (seared skate wing, cold lobster sandwich) and loved it. Very pricey, but delicious. Too bad the sushi doesn't fare equally well.
What kind of chocolate cake was it?! Chocolate with ganache layers, chocolate whipped cream, chocolate raspberry, molten center, etc?
i had a totally different experience on Saturday night. Service great. Food great. We didn't get any sushi but all the fish was fresh and tasty. we had the meyer lemon tart for desert. wow-weee! tart, just the way i like it! maybe you should try it again and nix the sushi, go for the cooked fish!! by they way, by 8pm Sat night every table was taken.
i enjoyed it a lot.
