I know they're in season and I'm eager to get my hands on some. Where is a good place to buy them in the Boston area?

Leaves? i've never seen them with leaves. they are just the uncoiled shoots of a type of fern. the leaves don't come until after it un-curls and grows a bit. unless you count the feathery things as leaves.

Next time you get some, just un-curl one. You'll see small beginings of leaves, but there is definitely(and should be) foliage on there.

Hah, when I lived in Boston a couple years ago, I did get some and I think I bought them on Beacon Hill somewhere ... but I don't remember exactly where. It may have been the gourmet wine and food shop on Newbury street at F or G. They taste like a foresty woodsy fancy asparagus, and my husband had an allergic reaction to them, so needless to say I am not dying to try them again.

Whiole Food in Newton Centre had them last week but not this weekend. Russo's in Watertown and Harvest Coop in Central Square might be other places to look. I remember seeing fiddleheads in the big market at Porter Square in the early 90s but haven't seen them in any Shaw's over the last two years (since I"ve been back in Boston).
