Opus change - still great!
My husband and I had dinner at Opus for the second time tonight. The first time was quite a while ago. That time, we had the 3-course tasting menu for $30. There was no mention of the tasting menu option on the menu tonight, so I asked about it. Our waiter said there had been a change in policy. Now, the tasting menu is available only to people who have had it before or who specifically ask about it. And there's a four-course minimum, and each course is $10. I asked if my husband and I could get different dishes, and he said no. I also asked whether only one of us could get the tasting menu, and he said that they preferred the entire table to order it. I was disappointed about not being able to get different dishes, but I understood about the entire table ordering it.
We ordered a 4-course tasting menu, and my husband had the wine pairing. The food was just as great if we remembered, if not better. We started off with a watermelon gazpacho in a shot glass. I'm not the biggest fan of gazpacho, but it was delicious. Then, we had three nice slices of seared tuna on top of chopped cooked tuna with cucumbers and anchovy sauce. Really great. Then we had the poached egg with creme fraiche, bacon and cream of wheat in the egg shell. I was a bit wary when I heard the description, but really yummy. Then, we had celery soup with kurobuta pork belly. Interesting - the flavors and textures worked well together. Then, we had the veal with sweatbreads and vegetables with wine reduction. Really to die for. The meat was so tender. I had never had sweatbreads before. Much better than expected. The crispy exterior was a great contrast to the insides. Then, we had dessert. Strawberries, rhubarb, and whipped cream on an almond cookie. I'm a sucker for fruit desserts, especially tart ones, so this was great.
All in all, we had a great meal. We were stuffed! They were also quite generous with the wine. Our server came by with extra pours for my husband to make sure he had enough with each course. The service was also great, just the right amount of attention. And the variety and quality of bread at the beginning was great. I filled up too much on bread, which is my tendency when there's good bread around. But still worth it. We also love the ambience and the decor.
The food was $40 a person and the wine pairing was $30. Not an everyday meal but really worth it for the quality of food you get. Like a previous poster said, I really think Opus offers food that served at very fine dining establishments for a lot less money.
Unfortunately, there were only three other tables of people tonight. It worried us that this place may not be able to sustain itself if this is a common occurence. Plus, I'm sad because we're moving across town, so we'll no longer be in walking distance. Anyway, bottom line - go and ask for the tasting menu!
Hmm...interesting! I went to Opus with some friends tonight and they let us do the 3-course tasting menu for $30, plus extra for the wine pairing. We had a strawberry gazpacho (amuse), seared tuna with a Spanish preparation of vegetables and meat, the poached egg (as a gift from the chef), veal cheeks with sweetbreads, and a chocolate dessert with strawberries. So in the end, we actually had more than 3 courses--definitely worth the money. The staff was friendly and attentive, and our server as also the sommelier, so we received a lot of great info about our wine pairings (all Italian wines). They also just came out with a new list of tea-inspired cocktails. We all had the Opus Zen, which was kaffir lime, mint, and green tea liquor.
Echoing what Norton said--The place was pretty empty tonight, but I really hope this place can survive. Go support Opus!
