Where to find authentic TRES LECHES?

After having tried Tres Leches in Miami, I'm disappointed at some of the tres leches offerings on the menus locally. If you know where I can find the real thing (or close to it), please share! PS: Tres Leches Cakes are not the same!

    The offering at Guapo's is only 'sort of' a cake, but not really. It's darn good.

      Hey try La Mexicana Bakery and Taquria off Route 1 in Alexandria. The have the BEST tres leches. And Im mexican so I know what a good tres leches is!!!! Besides the tres leches, they have different types of mexican pastries. Im a california native and since moving from california to virginia, the Mexicana Bakery has been the only place that i have found tres leches. Try it.

        What part of Alexandria? Is there anything else you'd recommend from there? Might be worth a trip!

          Hey Chower, its on route one on Arlington Dr. Across the street from a honda dealer. There number is 703-717-0807. All the bread/pastries there are really good. Food wise, I would strongly recommend tacos de carnitas (shredded pork), actually all the tacos are great. Their tortas are really good too. Let me know what you think. :)

        Every Latin baker has his or her own recipe. It's like asking for "authentic" chocolate cake. There is no one, truly authentic recipe. That said, I like the tres leches at Cafe Atlantico a lot. The tres leches at Costa Verde in Arlington is better than most.

          Are you talking about the mixture that makes carmel-like goo? I just saw an article about it in the past week or so. I thought it was in the Post but I couldn't find it on their web site. It might have been in an issue of Gourmet or a similar magazine at a friend's house. It comes in a jar, but the imprssion I got is that it's kind of like buying curry powder or chili powder - "real" cooks would always make their own.

          Or are you talking about the cake soaked in condensed milk, milk, and heavy cream that everyone else here seems to be pointing you to?

            You're thinking of dulce de leche (caramel). Tres leches refers to the cake.

              Sorry! Brain damage setting in again. It's what happens when I can't find what I thought I was looking for.

              So is "tres leches" something else in addition to being a cake? I see the cake in most of the Latino bakeries over on the VA side of the pond. I've never tried it. It doesn't sound terribly appetizing, but definitely terribly fattening, which isn't always a bad thing.

                Back in the sixties that we're not supposed to be able to remember (see note about brain damage) we used to make "head pudding." You'd take a can of condensed milk, punch a hole in the top, and put it in a pot of simmering water for an an hour or so. It would make a rich, carmel custard that was great when you were . . . . . oh . . . . what was that we were doing?

                But I guess that's pretty close to dulce de leche.

                  Apparently, Butterfly, the OP is reffering to something that is not a cake, yet is still called Tres Leches. I am not familiar with it, are you?

                  The best tres laches cake I've had is made by the folks who run El Comalito on 14th St, that I found thanks to you. They no longer make it on a regular basis, you have to ask them to make a whole one in advance.
                  Though I can't say for sure if they are still in business; it's been a while since I've passed by there.

                    Tres leches cake is definitely a staple in a lot in Florida Cuban restaurants... I have no idea what the original poster could be referring to, if it isn't a cake. I've seen some less traditional applications of the tres leches technique (that is, using condensed milk/cream to "drown" something with a cakey texture)--but the tres leches de toda la vida is definitely in cake form... It's not as heavy as you might think, since the cake itself is not rich.

                    And, yes, I still remember that cake from El Comalito! That lady could really bake.

                    oh! Rita's in Kensington, on Connecticut Avenue just before Knowles Ave.
                    kind of tricky parking but if you turn right at the light at Conn. and Knowles and make an immediate right into parking lot, you'll be fine.....it's worth the effort !

                      OK. Thanks guys! there are quite a few options here. I've never been to any of them. So I got to make a list and try one by one and hope that I will find "the one". Once I found it, it will be worth the effort and time. :)
