Mamoun's Shawarma

michele cindy Apr 30, 2007 10:01 AM

I can't believe I've been going to Mamoun's for over 30 years and never ordered shawarma there or anywhere else for that matter! I ordered it today for the 1st time and it was absolutely delicious. The meat had flavorful crisp fatty edges. I'm wondering, what's on the other side of the fence? Where else has a shawarma this good? Again it was the 1st one I ever had, but I think their falafel is one of the best in the city, so I am guessing their shawarma is right up there as well.

Mamoun's schwarma was my favorite when I lived in NYC. I still miss it. That was my quick, delicious lunch on my way to school for two years. Loved it, loved it, loved it! I can't say that I found another like it in the city, but I didn't look too hard, because I really loved Mamoun's. :)

Please have one for me too. :)

Right up the street at Yatagan, closet to Bleecker. Mamoun's has better falafel but Yatagan has better schwarma (in my opinion at least!).

Better still than Yatagan is just across the street from Mamoun's at Ali Baba. Make sure he grills the meat for a bit, maybe along with the onions. One of the best meat sandwiches you'll ever eat!

I agree that Ali Baba is a bit better than Mamoun's, currently the best on the block. Olive Tree stopped making it for some reason, but theirs was the absolute best. All of these are pure lamb shawarma, which is how I like it.

I've never had schwarma at Yatagan, in fact I didn't know they made it. Their Doner Kebab sandwich, though, is outstanding. Eat it with the hot sauce.

Yatagan doesn't make shawarma. They do doner kabab, which is in a different category.

Love that amazing Mamoun's shawarma, haven't had anything like it anywhere. I'm going there tonight. I don't know of anywhere that does it better. There's a place on Coney Island Avenue near Cortelyou Road that used to have really good shawarma, but it went way downhill a lnog time ago. I haven't been back in years, so I don't know if it's worthwhile anymore. Also I forget the name.

one of my all time favorite ny chow! ate it almost every day for a couple of years when i worked in the area. i didn't care much for the new st marks location the one time i tried it. for other places, i've grown to really like the shawarma at chickpea. it's a different style and not always lamb (sometimes chicken or turrkey depending on the day) but still great.
