Report on Vetri, La Famiglia, Matyson's.
I took the advice of several of you and traded in our Bookbinder's reservations for La Famiglia. It was superb in every way and I thank you. We both had the veal special with fontina and a white wine demi-glace. I've had red wine demi many times but never white. It was a fantastic dish. Appetizers were shrimp with porcini and aurgula and tagliatelle with pancetta, tomato, onion & white wine. We were blown away with the wine list and the service was impeccable yet friendly.
Vetri was everything it's cracked up to be and then some. My starter was a baby artichoke salad with the most intense shaved parmesan on top. Outstanding. I couldn't pass up homemade pasta, so I had a small portion of handkerchief pasta tossed with a lamb and olive ragu. Main course was the most tender & moist turbot I'd ever had atop a potato cake, more tomato & olives scattered on top.
The DH had veal kidney, minced & formed into a cake like affair served over soft polenta, followed by a ravioli with sage butter, then the guinea hen. Sorry I don't remember the details, I was too busy scarfing up my own dinner. I am ashamed to admit it but we also had dessert, profiteroles with pistachio gelato for me, don't have a clue what he had.
The cappucino was sinful. All in all, one of the better meals I've had in the states in a long time.
Matyson's was good but my memory has totally failed me on what I ate. I know I had shrimp for a starter, the DH ordered the herring and we split the quail appetizer. Other than that I just remember that I enjoyed it.
Philly has some great restaurants and I'll admit to being skeptical. Living in New Orleans has spoiled us to some extent and we were totally delighted at what your town has to offer. I wish the wine stores had better selections, but that's another matter for another time. Thank you all for your help & advice.
great review! thanks for reporting back. i don't know how vetri has eluded me for such a long time, now. i NEED to get there! next time you are in town, the same guy's just opened up a new restaurant for you to try, osteria, at 640 north broad. my friends have given it rave reviews and its next on my list to try.
next time i go to new orleans i'm going to hit you up. almost every meal i've ever had there has been mediocre to horrible, so someone who enjoys similar restaurants in philly obviously knows where to eat in NO.
i may hav ejust added NO to my vacation calendar for the year....hmmm...:)
