celebratory dinner

Looking for a place to have a celebratory dinner for 7-10 people. american, bistro, french, or itlaian food, $20-30 a plate. Mostly concerned about atmosphere. A place with a great outside dining experience would be great.

Gascogne, the French bistro, on 8th Av., b/t 17th & 18th St., serves delicious food and is one of our favorite spots for dining al fresco. Their back garden is thoroughly charming.

We've never been to Barbetta, but there are photos of their garden on their website, and it looks gorgeous! I've read mixed reports about the food, but if that's not as important as atmospherics, this might suit your needs. They don't include a menu on the website, but Menupages shows it and it's a $55 prix-fixe. So, go there to see it, then scroll down and click to Barbetta's website for the photos.

Les Halles on Park Ave. in the 20's....great inexpensive food and outside tables. You can't go wrong with their hangar steak!! Steak Frites is superb.

I have to disagree about Les Halles. It's gone way downhill in recent years. Barely mediocre food; awful service; seating indoors that's so close, it would make a sardine feel squished; and an insanely high noise level. As far as outdoor dining there is concerned, I don't think eating on the sidewalk with traffic whizzing by constitutes wonderful ambiance.

Check out Gonzo in the West Village!
