Pio Maya

Anyone know what's going on with the place? I attempted to stop there for lunch yesterday since I've heard so many great things about it. The place was closed around 1 p.m. yesterday.

      1. The one on 8th st? I think there was some other place by the same name that people get confused about (that one closed). The one on 8th street is wonderful. Great rotisserie chicken, good tortas with steak, and shrimp burritos!

Yes, I went to the one on 8th Street last week and it was closed. Does anyone know if it is now opened?

It's still closed--DOH. Would love to go there if/when they reopen. What does it look like on the inside? Is there enough room to sit and eat comfortably?

        2. Eater is reporting Pio Maya as being permanently closed.

Will try to verify personally this weekend.

I doubt it. Why is the boss of Pio Maya overseeing the redo, then? My sense is they're making it less cafeteria-like and maybe even scrapping the grill in the entry room for cooking everything in the back. They already put in faux-marble tiles on the floor.

Marble tiles in a taqueria? That's not exactly promising news...

Went to Pio Maya for lunch today. The service was so slow. I thought the food was ok for Mexican but definitely not the best that I've had. I think El Paso on the upper east side is a lot better.

Now that the grill is gone, (sounds like a BB King song!), from upstairs, the service will be even slower than once it was. Invariably the orders from the back kitchen were always a little off, i.e. lacking ordered guacamole or slightly dry.. I ended up always requesting the burrito was made from up front, so I could make sure they didn't mess it up.
