When you mentioned upscale pub, i thought of the James Joyce on 4th, which is nice and has decent pub food, but isn't really all that special.
I'd suggest Velvet at the Grand Theatre. It's a beautiful room, and usually not too busy, so if you call ahead, they should have no problem accommodating you. On friday and saturday evgs, they have djs to add to the atmosphere (full disclosure: i'm the friday night dj). it's owned by the same people who do Divino and Cilantro. The staff is friendly and attentive, and the food is great.

What are they planning on doing - just dinner, or do they want more? Want a private room, or sitting with the "public"?
My suggestion would be someplace like E8ght + Mercury. They can have a nice meal in a modern atmosphere, and then move over to the club and drink and dance and hang out.
If it's just dinner, let us know and there'll be a slew of other recommandations.
