Really good sushi lunch - from Sherman Oaks to Camarillo?

Major apologies for bringing up this subject AGAIN! But sushi bars change quickly from week to week. I need current input!

I am searching for a really good sushi bar to take a friend for a birthday lunch, anywhere between Sherman Oaks (yes, I will consider Studio City) and Camarillo. I am looking for really good sushi, as well as a pleasant environment at the bar.

I would like to hear your suggestions of places you have visited recently that you love. Thanks!

Sushi Iki in Tarzana probably has the best quality fish in your geographic location. The downside is that it is incredibly expensive (offsetting that is the fact that the slices are quite large). It is far superior to 4 on 6 or Tama in terms of quality.

I completely agree, Jwsel. Sushi Iki is one of my favorites in the entire city. Perhaps, however, it is a little too subdued or "pure" for a birthday lunch with a girlfriend... Additionally, this same friend and I have been to Iki, so I thought I might go elsewhere.

But thanks for the instant Pavlovian drool reaction!

And since we both like Iki, do you like Nobu? How about Asanebo?

Thanks, all, for posting so quickly and with such conviction. I know, we all have our favorites, but you have come up with some good suggestions (I have been to 4 on 6 and Tama, but not within the past year). I can post freely when someone else asks the question, but when it is my own dilemma to come up with an idea, I am stumped.

On yet a different post someone mentioned Nobu in Malibu...ok geography...any thoughts on the current state of the service and food as it compares with some of the other suggestions here.

4 on 6 in Encino. Sit at the bar with Saito, and you'll be treated to some delicious, fresh and unusual fish.

Tama Sushi in Studio City really sets the standard for the area. You will be happy if you go there. Fair value and superior quality.

I would actually suggest Sushi House of Taka, Asanebo, or Ahi Sushi on Ventura and Coldwater. Not many people talk about Ahi Sushi and I never had the desire to try it either until my firends were all meeting there for lunch and I reluctantly joined them. I was very surprised by the quality and variety...not only do they take care of the Katsuya-loving people by offering all the typical stuff that they have, they have beautiful traditional items on and off the menu. It is not a scene, people who really like good quality over trying to be one of the cool kids will appreciate it. To top it off, it turned out that I knew the owner from way back in 1990 when he was first starting out as a sushi chef and I was just beginning to become adventurous. Great sake selection, good wine list, several good by-the-glass choices, and if you don't finish your bottle, they'll put you name on it and let you keep it there till next time. Try it some time.

I love Kiriko...but not in my geography for this occasion.
