My boyfriend is coming into town for the weekend, he has never been to LA. I am looking for something fun and upbeat, open to any suggestions for cocktail lounges afterwards as well. Thanks!

Sushi Roku in Santa Monica is a bit overpriced, but it has a great location and the sushi and seaweed salad are tasty!

I love R23-very nice ambience-frank gehry chairs and you can do drinks after at one of the many new joints downtown like Edison.....very downtown LA flavor.

katana has delicious food and the interior - even the bathrooms - is stunning. youcan easily find a spot for coctails on sunset too. also, yamashiro is nice if you are looking for very upscale/elegant, then head to the bars on the blvd.

the food and ambience at either 'koi' on la cienega or 'katana' on sunset are probably exactly what you're looking for. both have great food and a very l.a. vibe.

if you're looking to do some bar-hopping after dinner, you might be better off at katana because you can just walk to a ton of places on sunset from there. the parking situation at koi is a royal pain, and you'd probably have to drive elsewhere after the meal.

skip roku. while i'm a fan of the location at the beverly center, i think the one in s.m. sucks. the service is beyond horrendous, and i've had bad food there on more than one occasion. and when i say bad, i mean the 'ugh, this fish is definitely NOT fresh' kind of bad.

I agree that Katana is a great fun option. I love R-23 but it is not "fun and upbeat."
