Lugers: Great food but wow, what a pain!

  • 3

So after having to cancel several Luger's reservations over the years for various reasons, we finally got a reservation last night for 9:45. I called a couple weeks ago and they told us that was the last seating. I asked if we'd be rushed and said if so I''d prefer to come another day when we could eat earlier than the last seating. A very nice man told me that of course there would be no rush. Just that we couldn't reserve later than 9:45.

We arrived at 9:30 and were told that we would be seated in a few minutes. 9:45 rolled around and then 10. We had a drink at the bar and I asked the hostess how long it might be. Without any verbal response she shrugged and went back to chatting with her friend.

10:15 rolls around and the gentleman we checked in with when we arrived looked at us and said "You're not waiting for a table are you?" We said we were and pointed to our reservation in the book. He seated us and immediately our waiter came over and said "We better do this really fast. The kitchen closed 10 minutes ago." He also encouraged us not to order the bacon because it would come out the same time as the steak because the staff was trying to get out of there. Anyway, you get the point.

The food. Wow! Amazing in everyway. I won't describe the bacon and the steak because it's been done so many times on this board. Nor will I continue to complain about the service anymore or tell you just how awful the wine list was. But in short, I don't mind rude service but this was beyond rude. Honestly made our meal less pleasant.

Amazing food, bad wine, poor service. But man that steak is good. We'll be back, but at an earlier time. : )

  1. Go during lunch if at all possible. You can just walk in with no reservation same food, no hassle.

Think again - you need reservations for lunch, at least you do on a weekend. Wanted to go for lunch on Sat, called in advance, completely booked. I agree, amazing steak but you really have to plan in advance.

I should have been clearer, weekday lunch. I've gone several times and it's great.
