Weylu's on Rt 1

Drove past the old Weylu's space this weekend on my way to the north shore. It looked like lights were on and there was some activity. Has it re-opened?

Another restaurant took over the spot. It is called Jin. I haven't been there, though I've read pretty mixed reviews on the place.

update: apparently it is now open under the name "New Weylu's". I only know b/c a friend was just hired to play some jazz there on Friday night........what's the scoop?

I recall eating there years ago - over the top opulence and grandeur. Didn't the original restaurant close due to tax evasion?? Never went to the steak house. It was West End for some time too...

Who knows? Weylus went under for serious back tax problems. Then it was empty and decaying for years. Then East Buffet renovated and had a promising opening only to quickly decline in quality and then go belly up. Then Jin Restaurant did the same (at least they finally got rid of the old decaying Weylu's sign).

I have little hope if new ownership repeats the same mistakes. I've become very wary of the good quality of the opening month or two quickly being followed by mediocrity.

Unfortunately, this location is now cursed with that impression - new owners will really have to shake up the pattern - dramatically. If they are just trying to lure people in for ample, mediocre food, people have lots of other options for that (albeit without the excessive atmosphere).

Personally, I think the place would make a great gay dance club.

I may actually be dragged there tonight to hear my friend's band........I'll report back if I'm brave enough to try the food.....expectations are low......
