Looking for Chinese food near Phoenix Art Museum

We are going to the Rembrandt exhibit and would love to have some good, real chinese food.
Is there anything good near the museum? I would love real Hong Kong style. If not, is Cyclo anywhere near the museum? It seems to be a chowhound favorite.

  1. Cyclo is in Chandler and is about 20 miles from the Phoenix Art Museum, so it's not a good choice.

For good Chinese in proximity to PAM, I can think of some options:

Gourmet House of Hong Kong -- about 1.5 miles east of the museum on McDowell Road just west of 16th St. GHHK is a total dive, but I love the food. No liquor license.

China Chili -- about the same distance north of the museum at 3rd St. and Flower. I haven't been there yet, but the reviews are good. It's a bit cleaner and more attractive than GHHK.

Fate -- a popular downtown spot south of the museum. I haven't been wowed by it the way other folks have, but I think it's an option to keep in mind. Perhaps the best ambience of the three.

Google shows an old address for China Chili. Here's a custom map with the current locations of the restaurants: http://tinyurl.com/2qld95

I found myself stepping over bins of drity dishes/dishwater on my way to the bathroom the last time we went to Gourmet House of Hong Kong. That place ceases to exist in my rolodex.

I would also throw Golden Buddha into the ring. It's at the COFCO Center at 44st and Van Buren. It's not near the museum, but it's no more than 15 minutes away. If you live in the east valley, bonus.

I've updated the map to show Diamonds and Golden Buddha. You might have to zoom out to see all the recommendations.

      2. China Chili!!!!

        3rd street and osborn!

        1. My guess is that the closest truly authentic Hong Kong style restaurant would be Diamond's Restaurant, 4492 N. 7th Ave. Kind of a dive but definitely not an Americanized place.

We did China Chili last week for dinner. My dad (restaurant his whole life) is from Canton, China so that's the primary thing we eat when we go out with extended family. We thought the food was the equal of the dinner places we typically go (Tao Garden, Best Hong Kong). Solid Chinese food.

I mentioned that we should go to Diamond (as I've also heard good things) to my dad but he nixed the idea. While he's definitely no clean freak, he said he just read they had 8 health department violations? Checked it out & that was in January: http://tinyurl.com/3dufgv

Those are also the two Chinese places that I know about and like.

We also do C-Fu for dim sum & special events but for some reason, we rarely do regular dinner there.

Love the dungeness crab @ C-Fu sauteed with Ginger and Spring Onion.....
Messy but good! You can't go wrong w/ any of their live seafood dishes on the evening.....

          2. My vote is for China Chili. Best I've found out her so far.
