Where to buy produce in Center City?

GiaK Apr 22, 2007 11:24 AM

As a recent transplant from California, I've been disappointed with the produce at my local market (near Graduate Hospital). Any suggestions for the best place to shop for fresh fruits & veggies on a grad student budget? (Preferably close by in CC). Or are there any good farmers' markets in the area? Thanks for any help.

Sue's Produce, 18th just north of Sansom. Absolutely our #1 source, top of the charts!

There is a (small) farmer's market during the summer on Saturdays on 23rd at Fitler Square.

Iovine's in Reading Terminal Market for certain specialty items.

Italian Market for certain items (e.g. tomatillos) and items where we want a larger quantity for making smoothies etc. You can get cheap in the italian market, but quality varies. You generally know you'll have to throw away 1/3 the veggies/fruit, but the price makes up for it.

Sue's on 18th. They also sell Claudio's cheese (Try the Prima Donna at 10 bucks a pount), South St bagels and Sarcone's Bread and Rolls...No other place in the city can compare.
