Hi!

I'm trying to decide between Ubiquitous Chip, Stravaigin and Two Fat Ladies. If you had to choose 2 of the above 3, which would it be?

Also, for Stravaigin, are both branches the same or is one better than the other?

Same for Two Fat Ladies, is the West End or the City Centre one better?

I'll be taking a hop-on-and-hop-off bus around Glasgow. Would any of these restaurants be near any of the hop-off stops? Just wondering.

Any suggestions of a good breakfast place near Queen or Central Station in Glasgow or in Drumchapel? Something unique to Scotland?

And any good lunch spots in Drumchapel? I'll be heading there for a day.

Cheers,

Well.. I love Stravaigin. So much so I go there every week. The Chip has a good rep but I wasn't that impressed, it is very scottish though. The two fat ladies is good but very fish orientated. The Stravaigin on Gibson St has a mush better atmosphere. You can sit upstairs in the bar which the best option as you can order from the bar menu, specials and the restuarant menu. It is more laid back than the other two which are more typical restaurant set ups.. So Strav and two fat ladies for me.. oh I would go to the two fat ladies on Dumbarton road rather than the one in town. It is the original and is cosier.

Thanks, rekha!

Any pub food suggestions for Glasgow? Or cheaper, dive type of places?

Do Scots eat salt beef sandwiches? If so, where can I get one?

Thanks so much!

I agree with Rekha, plus the two fat ladies on Dumbarton Road is quite near the Kelvingrove Art Gallery where the tourist hop-on-and-hop-off bus stops. You could also get the same bus to Glasgow University where it's a short walk don the hill to Stravaigin Gibson Street. Here's the address for the route map for the bus service: http://www.opentopsightseeingtours.co.uk/Images/Tours/Leaflets07/MPJPEG_07/Glasgow_Map07.jpg

I can't say I've ever encountered a salt beef sandwich in Glasgow I'm afraid.

As for pub food suggestions or dives, the vast majority of cheap pub food in Glasgow is awful but there are some noteable exceptions. If you like vegetarian food, the vegeburgers at the 13th Note (King Street, just off the Trongate in the Merchant City area) are usually really good even if you're a confirmed carnivore like me. Cafe Source at St. Andrews in the Square (St. Andrew's Square, Calton, near the Merchant City) is also good; the atmosphere is really laid back and modern and the prices are not really cheap but reasonable for what you get.

The trendy west end of the city generally has the better choice for (relatively) cheap eats, but for the city centre I can recommend the soups and sandwiches at Soups U, a tiny sandwich bar just off Sauchiehall Street. Fairly good value for money, and because it's mainly popular with the takeaway lunch crowd during the week it can be quite easy to get a seat if you want to sit in. Hope you enjoy your visit!
