Angelenas - Soul food in Alhambra

YungDotCom Apr 21, 2007 09:22 AM

I went to Angelenas on Main St. west of Garfield yesterday. They serve the best gumbo I've had in SoCal so far. It's the thick, flavorful gumbo, not the clear, soupy kind. The fried catfish was pretty good too. Their corn bread was a little dry, and their collard greens was a little sweet tasting.

I got there around 7:30-8:00 PM, and there were only 2 tables filled. The place was clean, bright, and nicely decorated. I am definitely going there again. They are located at:

Angelena's Restaurant

I liked the BBQ sauce here, but it's a little on the tangy-fruity-sweet side as sauces go. The side orders were all good (we shared 4 side orders and 1 entree, and they were so nice they didn't even charge for one of the side orders).
I'll have to try the gumbo next time.

my experience there was a complete opposite. i went with a party of 8 and the food was horrible. everything was overseasoned and the gumbo was especially horrible. this was over a year ago when it was new-ish and empty.

The place still looks new-ish and empty. :-x

Everytime I pass by, there are very few customers. I wonder how they stay in business.

Is that at all related to the Angelena's that used to be in the Valley?

Angelena's has probably some of the best fried chicken around. The skin is so perfectly crisp it just makes your mouth water.

If you like really cheesy mac and cheese they also do it really well.

I am in love with their rice and gravy and yams, perfect compliments to a nice plate of fried chicken. i do wish they sold 3 piece chicken meals instead of 2 pieces cause i can't get enough of it!

They also have chicken and waffles!
