La Verdad (Ken Oringer Mexican)

Tried out La Verdad before the game tonight. Place was packed at 5:30, but we were able to get a table. It is mainly a bar surrounded by some tables, with some outdoor seating also. Entrance can be slightly confusing, as you have to walk past the non-descript take-out portion to get to the actual sit-down restaurant.

Started with street corn a la Toro: It is $2 per piece, with the pieces being larger than at Toro (where it is $5 for 4 small pieces). While the flavors were close, the corn was not as juicy and the kernels were smaller. It could have also used some more of the awesome cheese!

Tacos are all $2.50-2.75 each: We got potato and chorizo (very spicy), and awesome carnitas one, a lightly battered fish, and one more that I can't remember. Chile rellenos had a nice bite from the pepper but definitely needed more cheese and batter. Tacos are very small, about 3 bites each, but they had great flavor and were on the best tortillas I've had in Boston so far.

Chips and guacamole ($5.95) weren't my favorite. The chips, while freshly fried and very flavorful, were too thick and bordered on chewy in places. Seemed to be popular though, it was one of the only things you could share.

Also on the small menu are East LA burritos and tortas, with your chose of meat. Not sure if these have rice and beans, but I will definitely try them next time. These were larger portioned. Prices are the same inside and at the takeout counter.

To be honest, it seemed that most people were there for the game and drinks, and few were there just for the food. Big TV screens and pleasant people-watching on Lansdowne street!

I thought the flavors here were more authentic than El Pelon, and it's some of the best Mexican I've had here in Boston, and I'm from California. It'll be interesting to see what happens when they expand their menu. It also seems to be great option if you want to bring food into Fenway.

  1. I ate there today as well. I agree with you on the corn - it was tasty, but the kernels were tiny... There wasn't much "meat" on it. Hopefully it will be better in the coming months.

I also had a fish taco and a turkey with mole taco. Very tasty and extremely fresh flavors. I like that the tacos are small, as you can get a variety to try all the flavors. I'm looking forward to heading back there.

I'm surprised they have corn at all this early in the season.
