Cascina, on 9th Av., b/t 45th & 46th Sts. Good food, efficient service, pleasant surroundings, and moderate prices.

There is a very good, very simple, tiny and super inexpensive (I hate to call it cheap!) Italian place on 9th Ave between 46th and 47th: Basilica. Very homey and neighborhood-y feel. There are other more expensive places to go in the area that are very good (and some not so good), but this little hole in the wall is a favorite of mine.

44 Southwest, on the SW corner of 44th and 9th Ave. excellent. gets crowded before shows though.
