Driving from San Diego to San Francisco for the first time

What are some of the must-eat places? Dig local, off-the-beaten path stuff.

Thank you!!

route 1 will be fun! (as long as you don't get stuck behind a trailer)

about halfway through the 70-mile stretch, closer to the big sur side I would say, there is a restaurant on the OCEAN side of the highway (its the only one so keep an eye out) -- they serve the best fish and chips ive ever had.

That's a pretty broad request - you might try local searches for the areas where you plan to stop, or more pointed inquiries for those areas. There have been some good threads lately on the central coast areas including Santa Barbara, Cambria, the wine country up in that area, San Luis Obispo area and Big Sur area - the areas above that are covered on the Bay Area board, and below that on the LA boards. Good luck and have a great time! It would be really fun to get a report at the end!
