My friend's parents are coming to town and he needs recommendations for a place to go with the parents and 3 guy roommates. Looking for dinner and drink totals to be about $35 a person. Something with more atmosphere than Corduroy, any neighborhood, and no seafood or Asian ... any thoughts?

Fahrenheit and LIMA are def. going to be over $35/person for dinner and drinks. The average main course at Fahrenheit is usually in the upper $20s.

If the parents will be visiting Sunday through Thursday and if everyone agrees to eat off the prix fixe menu, you can have a great experience at Colvin Run Tavern in the Tysons area. The basic meal will cost $39. Tax and tip will drive up the price. Ditto the price of wine or drinks.

Frankly, I'm surprised you even mentioned Corduroy for that price. We've never eaten at Corduroy for that little, even during Restaurant Week.

How about Chef Geoff's, Dinos, Firefly, Matchbox, Clydes, Merkado, or Zola. Those might be around your price range...give or take. Might go slightly over with drinks though...unless you are looking to go super cheap food. Plus I agree...Corduroy is most likely over $35/person for dinner and a drink. Unless maybe you don't get appetizers and dessert and share bottles of wine.

I think Zola is out of this price range.
Dinos would be great--good neighborhood italian.
Also I'd like to throw Zengo into the mix, as well as Jaleo and Zaytinya (although Zaytinya might go over budget). Zengo is my vote--went with a group of girls and we shared a bottle of wine, several starters, and a few entrees (more than enough food) for $35 per person, including tax and tip.

Tapas might actually be a good idea since you all can share stuff. You just need to be careful because that stuff can add up quickly. But if you go somewhere like Jaleo (which I honestly must say is not my absolute favorite but it is fun) you can get a jug of Sangria to share as well. Might be a good time.

I like some of those, but man Chef Geoff's and Merkado are really prime examples of mediocrity. I'll never get what's supposed to be good about that place other than the super cheap burgers on special.

701 in Penn Quarter is consistently underrated. Most entrees are in the $18 to $25 range. Great atmosphere. Piano bar.
Montsouris or Sesto Senso in Dupont Circle. Montmartre on Capital Hill.
