Jerne - To go or not to go?

My inlaws are in town and staying at the Ritz in MRD and we were wondering about trying Jerne for diner. Some people have told me that they liked it but reading recent fellow chowhounders reviews it sounds like maybe it's not what it used to be.

Please let me know if it's worth trying if we should just take them to tried and true Joe's on Abbott Kinney.

  1. I like Jer-Ne.

    For the most part the food is quite good, and a bit inventive. Under new chef Drew Sayes the place is now a tapas-like restaurant (and not the uber-fusion place under former chef Dakota Weiss).

    The execution and refinement of some of the dishes still needs work (avoid the beef offerings, like the steak or the carpaccio) and stick to the seafood items. The scallops and the clam were esp. good.

    (Full discloure: I know the manager of the Ritz at MDR, so take it for what its worth.)

    1. I had lunch there recently, as I was attending a meeting at the hotel. The food was mediocre at best, none of the dishes were prepared as requested (e.g. someone asked for no bacon on the sandwich and it came with bacon anyway) and the service was absolutely horrible. I'd take Joe's over Jerne anyday.
