I'm thinking of taking a trip to visit this spot. Any thoughts or recommendations? Have read a bit on this board but interested in more feedback before I venture out.

Recently checked out Kane's in Saugus and found it worth the trip but probably won't be a regular because it's just not located anywhere that I usually find myself. I will work it into an itinerary if I'm ever headed in that direction, however. Purchased a dozen donuts, a coffee roll and a bismark (never did get a review on that... must follow up with my team of taste testers!) Positive reviews of the coffee roll, glazed jelly, coconut jelly cruller, cinnamon, butter crunch and chocolate covered. Only thumbs down went to the Boston Cream. There's an interesting variety of other goodies, but I focused on donuts this time.

Also ventured to Sweet Tooth in Southie. The shop is very attractive, almost European in ambience, packaging A plus (hot pink boxes wrapped with brown tulle), and the owner and baker's assistant were very friendly and accomodating. The selection is mostly an assortment of good, old fashioned comfort desserts......cheesecake, lemon bars, brownies, blondies, dessert plate sized cookies (chocolate chip, peanut butter, oatmeal etc) flakey pastries like peach streudel and cherry tarts, as well as a variety of truffles. They also make cakes and cinnamon rolls (Wed. thru Sat.) Portions are generous, prices ranging from $1.40 for the cookies to close to $4 for some of the other selections.

I purchased a variety of items, enjoyed them but again, I won't be a regular. Unlike Kane's I probably wouldn't stop in again even if in the neighborhood. Nothing really impressed or had the wow factor I look for being a fairly solid homebaker who seeks something that I can't match at home. We enjoyed the streudel and cherry tart above all but some of the other items had a distinct aftertaste, almost chemical in nature, as if they were exposed to a cleaning agent while sitting in the case. It distracted completely from total enjoyment of the product. Maybe it was a fluke........but it was a definite put off.

And so now it's on to Canto 6 but not until after school vacation!

Since Canto 6 is my most regular stop in Boston, I can give some recs. If they have choc. almond croissants, grab one. You can't find those too often in places other than Montreal and Paris and their croissants in general are good (plain almond also). They always have two interesting types of scones. And good shortbread cookies of different flavors. Those are my main things but I was looking longling at some of the little individual tarts last weekend. Prices are .75 for shortbread to about $4 or 5 for little cakes. Oh, the cannelles (sp) are good too, $.50 a pop. I suggest you ride up Green St. and get a couple things at Blue Frog while you're in the neighborhood and do a comparison (I like the peanut butter white choc. chip scone if they have it).

i LOVE canto 6 but have to say I wasn't a huge fan of those cannelles....I have a feeling it was just personal preference..not necessarily my thing...I am sure they do them right. My favorite there is the pain au raisin..a croissant-like pastry studded with cinammon and raisins..mmm. But pretty much everything is good.
