best cannoli, Rocco's, palermo, ?

traumachef Apr 16, 2007 02:02 PM

In search of the best cannoli in New York. I have been going to Rocco's for many years and find it hit and miss, have not tried Caffe Palermo, and would be willing to try any place new. Any suggestions?

Veniero's on 11th St and First Ave is worth a try. I'm not sure how it compares to Rocco's, though, b/c I haven't been there.

      Yes. Rocco's and Palermo.

Rocco's fills the shell on demand which makes the shell harder (which is either good or bad depending on your taste). Palermo pre-stuffs their shells. And the sit down service is much better (normal speed) than at Rocco's (glacial speed), though you don't get your own table.

I've never had a bad cannoli at Ferraro's.

I have. The shell tastes like a fortune cookie and the cream has little flavor.

Here's my blind taste test. Two judges.

Rocco's was not in the test (since it's not in Little Italy) but it's great. The "street vendor" discussed in the post is Cha Cha on Mulberry.

sorry you had a bad experience. we must be repeatedly lucky there because we certainly haven't had any fortune cookie-tasting shells, thankfully. we've always found the cream to taste fine. one time we noted it wasn't as good as usual, but other than that, we had no complaints. for the fun of it, next time we're around, we'll check out the others & see...
