i would suggest babbo for italian and a more formal experience or blue ribbon on sullivan st for raw bar, a wide variety of amazing foods, and a more casual ambiance.

In New York you probably are faced with a wider variety of restaurants by type, as well as by sheer number than anywhere else in the world. You really need to narrow down your request just a bit.....

if you can't narrow it down by food, then what kind of vibe are you looking for?

            Here are a few suggestions:

Hip Hop Chow - Soul food and Chinese - 2nd Ave between St. Marks and 7th
            Pampano - upscale mexican seafood - 49th & 3rd Ave
Osteria del Circo - Italian- 55th between 6th & 7th (a little pricey but, they have a prix fixe menu between 5:30 - 6:30 or after 9:30 pm)

I suppose we could start with Per Se and work our way down... With literally hundreds of restaurants to choose from, you need to help narrow things down with some specifics. How many will be in your party? Any particular neighborhood(s)? Do you want casual or fancy? Do you want a big space or small? Do you want a place with high energy or someplace quiet, civilized, and conversation-friendly? Perhaps, romantic?

2 people. Somewhere fun (not too loud) & fancy. I'm staying in the New York Financial District, but have no issues with subwaying it to good food.
I love Indian, Italian, Thai...the list is endless.
