Breakfast Tacos?

MollyElise Apr 15, 2007 06:59 PM

I'm an Austin Tx transplant and the food I think I miss the most is breakfast tacos. Is there anywhere to get a good breakfast taco around here? I live in Old Town / Del Ray and work in Bethesda but am willing to travel for a good one.

Thank you!

I've lived in this area 20 years, and before that 5 years in San Antonio. I've never seen a breakfast taco, as you'd know it in Austin, on any menu anywhere. It may exist; indeed, it is possible to get an acceptable flour tortilla here at Cactus Cantina, Mi Rancho (in Silver Spring) and other places, so how dificult would it be to add some egg and chorizo to it?
While breakfast tacos may be a bit elusive, you might try some of the taquerias now sprouting up in and around the area. The one I like is Taqueria Distrito Federal on 14th St. in Columbia Heights. A snippet from the Wasington Post (about a year ago) is pasted in below:

``The taqueria also serves breakfast, offering huevos rancheros ($5), among other things. Pozole and menudo ($6 each), traditional Mexican soups, are served as specials on weekends.''

    Taqueria Distrito Federal, 3463 14th St. NW. Open Sunday through Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Thursday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Call 202-276-7331.

There are a surprising handful of places in Reston/Herndon that serve chorizo and eggs and/or huevos rancheros - most with other offerings. I don't recall ever seeing a "breakfast taco" and haven't tried to order a straight taco in the morning (though at least one place I'm sure would accommodate). I know that isn't the area you're looking for, but with Arlington being what it is, I'd think there would be similar options. Does the place in the CVS parking lot on Columbia Pike open early, I wonder? Any of the numerous small holes in the wall that rarely if ever get mentioned here?

Not breakfast tacos per se, but Tortilla Cafe has a good breakfast burrito with chorizo. Cheap.

Molly, have you tried brunch at Taqueria Poblano (sp?) on Mt Vernon, in your neighborhood?

Granted, it's not exactly what you are looking for, but may hold you over until you find the traditional ones you seek...

District Taco on 13th and F has the best breakfast tacos in DC by a mile and they are as good as anything I've had in Texas or California

corn tortillas, valentino's hot sauce, thinly sliced jalepanos, scrambled eggs, and a little bit of mayo - my favorite!

District Taco has other locations now too, and a food cart. It was what I would suggest too.
