Bodega - Wine Bar in Santa Monica - Worth it?

umeakai Apr 15, 2007 03:36 PM

I just noticed Bodega in Santa Monica around 18th and Broadway. I've never been to the Pasadena location, but I was wondering if anyone can shed any light on it?
The website says it offers food (better than Air Conditioned) and has a good deal called "Jackson Tuesdays" where all bottles of wine are $20.

Any recommedations / reviews?

Decent wine selection at a good price. However, the food (small pizzas, tapas-style dishes) is neither good nor bad. And the service is terrible. Really busy right around post-work hours (6-8ish) with a fairly hip crowd. Worth a try, but it gets old quick.

Happy Hour can be a good deal. Other than that, I don't think much of the place. They serve cheap wine for $8 per glass and tell you that you're getting a deal, and they serve all the wines in low ball type glasses.
I know they're impractical, but if I'm paying $8 for a glass of wine, I'd like a decent wine glass rather than something you'd get at C&O's.

I've only been to the Pasadena location but from the sounds of it the SM one isn't all that different - Bodega serves cheap wine, so only HH (at $5 a glass) is worth it. Maybe soju/sake shots with co-workers after a tough day at work.

The eats are good enough for something to nosh with the wines (I'd avoid their cheese & pepperoni platter like the plague, however), but I would make my dinner plans elsewhere.

Bodega is good for happy hour, but not much else. I've been to the Pasadena location a few times, and while the food is good, it's nothing special. They serve fun, simple fare like tuna and cheese on crackers, pizza, and sliders. The wine, however, is not so great. I've had a few wines there that tasted a bit off. Their malbec, in particular is entirely too acidic and tasteless.

I've only been to the SM location, and once, around 10 pm. Dark and loud; good lounging areas and a place to mingle, but I'll reiterate what others are saying -- ok wine and ok food. Nice place to kick it with friends after work, if you're in the area. Just don't go out of your way for it.

It's close to home, so I might give it a try for a happy hour. Thanks for the advice!
