Delivery in Southie

I've lived in South Boston for several years, and I typically cook for myself on weeknights since the local dining options are so abysmal. But some nights I just want to be lazy and get takeout or (preferably) delivery. Unfortunately, it seems that my choices for delivery are limited to mediocre Chinese (i.e., Teriyaki House) or mediocre pizza. Any Southie folks out there have recommendations for decent delivery food in the hood? Do any of the places in Chinatown deliver down here? What about the Vietnamese places on Dot Ave?

For americanized chinese, I think the best place by far is south ocean on east broadway. I think the L street diner has the best calzones but their other food is just ok. I still haven't found anyplace that is worth consistently ordering from for pizza and subs. Currently I am using alfredo's for pizza and olympic for subs. Has anyone tried 3 clovers? It is owned by the sausage guy.

Yeah, definitely try Sal's.. It's a true standout amongst the standard Alfredo's type places. I used to live across from it and miss it dearly.

Can you sit down at Sal's or is it more of a take-out place? Wine or beer? Very important considerations!

Sit down place, unfortunately no alcohol :(

Food is DELICIOUS. And I'm not even a huge red-sauce Italian fan. :)

What do you recommend there? I've got a friend who's a pasta freak so we'll have to try it.

do you think sal's is better than l street?

Yes, loads better than L street. There's a pasta dish called "Uncle Vito's" or something, it's simple and good - linguini tossed with prosciutto, sun dried tomatoes, tomato sausage and good olive oil. That was my favorite. Their red sauce is also very tasty (albeit oily).

              I am a take out/delivery hound!

The places I order from most often and for different reasons

              Thai:
House of Siam, SOOOOOO Happy to have them!
              617-267-1755
I could never find the menu online, so I ordered what I knew they would have and asked for a menu

              Sushi: Teriyaki House
I think their sushi is pretty good for being in Southie and being delivery. I had the alligator roll last night! I dont often explore the rest of the menu
              617-269-2000

Mexican, if you can call it that:
              Taqueria Mexican Grill
              475 W Broadway
(between Dorchester St & F St)
              South Boston, MA 02127
              (617) 269-0061
I refer to this place as the Chinesse Burrito place. However i found that in the last year they have figured out what the good chicken is, I like that they make their own tortillas, and event though it is not the best burrito wrapping job(sometimes falls apart) I like it and it is fresh. a little to much lettuce on everything, but oh well.

Pizza: For good pizza I order from L street, now I dont find them to be the nicest of people and have some odd hours, but they are great and I love the BBQ chicken pizza, and most of their pastas.
If I want something different I get Mgoos' they have a white pizza I love, even if it is a bit greasy.
              L street: 617-268-1155
              Mgoos: 617-269-7587

              Regular food: American,
Amhreins actually delivers. I know, who knew. but they do. so often I get that when I want a good salad or something.

              Muls delivers when open.

Hope that helps, especially for any one new moving into the area.

We can have a whole other discussion as to WHY good places or fine dinning places never survive here

ETA: agrees with Sals and Mirasola 100%. OMG, if you dont see something you like, tell them what you are in the mood for and they will create something for you.

thanks for the Info on Rock Sugar, I never knew that. I walk past that place everyday

I did not know that 3-Clovers is owned by The Sausage Guy. He has a bit of a monopoly over there. I enjoy 3-Clovers' pizza but not their salads. I have started to order from Sergio's....Give them a call. Always professional and on time

A little tardy with this but here you go. For a good pizza (or any Italian dish) try Mirasola's. He's located at the intersection of "L" and East Eighth Streets. Only one set back. He doesn't deliver. It's definetly worth the trip. I think they close around 8PM, closed on Sunday. He also sells beer and wine. As far as other fare, try Rock Sugar, a Thai restaurant in downtown Boston. It's a small place on Batterymarch Street. They deliver to South Boston. They're less expensive than the place in the South End. Good luck.

I like Mirasolas, but I actually think Sal's (on the opposite corner) has better food in general.

Actually, once you establish where you want to get the food, Dining In, and other such meal delivery companies will deliver it within a certain radius. I've had good experience with them, although I am in a different part of town.

I enjoyed using Dining In when I lived in the North End, even though it was a few bucks more. Dining In options for Southie are extremely limited.

Incidently, I received a mailer today and the place formerly known as Ruth & Leo's Deli is now....wait for it....Supreme House of Pizza!!! Very original, with a menu cloned from every other crappy pizza/ sub joint in the hood. WTF.

Figgers! With all the expensive condos and development going on in Southie don't you think a few good restaurants could find there way over? And not just the waterfront area which I don't consider Southie anyway.

Heaven help us. I got a mailer the other day for YET ANOTHER pizza joint in the same area of Old Colony Ave called "Spinners Pizza." It purports to offer thin-crust Neapolitan pizza, but the menu looked like all the other pizza places. I'll stop by at some point and see what the pizza actually looks like, but I ain't holding my breath.

Who do you like for pizza in Southie? I've tried a couple on W. Broadway and L St. but that's it. I've only been in Southie for a little more than a year so am still trying places. Any good places for Italian cold cut subs? I used to live around the corner from Bob's in Medford and boy do I appreciate that place now!

                2. Food4Thought Apr 17, 2007 07:01 PM

For Thai, House of Siam, advertises that they deliver to Southie in that craptastic rag, SB Online, although I haven't tried it. Ruth and Leo's "appears" to be just like every other striving to be mediocre pizza/ sandwich joint that you find on every block, where you can take the identical menu and just change the name of the place. I have to be in a pretty bad way to order delivery in Southie.

I'll second the L St Diner.
They have a lot more than pizza and subs and the food is decent.

I live in the Leather District and we have the same delivery problems. Upper Crust on Charles Street will deliver to us, so you might want to call them to see if they deliver to Southie. A lot of restaurants in Chinatown only do delivery via Dining In which is so expensive. Would be very interested in Leather District delivery options.

Shanti does deliver to Southie but you may be better off ordering from them on a week night. I tried calling for a delivery this Saturday night and was told that they were very busy and it would be about an hour. I'll be interested to hear about some other good places. L St. Diner delivers and their pasta isn't bad. Has anyone tried Ruth and Leo's? The menu looks good...........

I'm sad to hear that about Shanti - I've never had a problem with delivery to South Boston from there. It's yummy. Try Bejing on the Common (cash only) for good Chinese delivery, Billy Tse will deliver sometimes (I call to check first before getting my hopes up!), and Amsterdam Cafe for a great sandwich selection, delivery or takeout. Also, Cafe Portobella has good Italian-style pizza (takeout only).

Ruth and Leo's has your usual pizza and subs but also imaginative sandwiches and "home cooked" hot dinners. http://www.ruthandleos.com/ Gotta try them one of these days!

You miight wanna call Shanti, the well-recommended Indian place in Dorchester, and see if they'd come to Southie. I used to live in Southie and remember someone saying they might deliver there.
