SF - Silver Clouds on Lombard ... happy hour & tequilla?

Anyone tried this place?

It got mentioned in a recent NY Times article about SF's latest up and coming in-spot ... Lombard Street.
http://travel.nytimes.com/2007/03/11/travel/11surfacing.1.html

"Also popular is Silver Clouds (1994 Lombard Street, 415-922-1977), a karaoke bar with a mishmash décor of neon Budweiser electric guitars and ornate chandeliers. It attracts old drinkers and young professionals alike, as well as the occasional tourist who happens by."

Who knew Silver Clouds had a menu. There's even an early bird special for $10.95. I'm guessing the joint opened in the 80's since the menu seems to reflect that ... blackened fish ... tarragon chicken and basic meat dishes.

Since I suspect this place never changes, here's a old 2004 post about Silver Clouds happy hour which is supposed to be decent. The link also mentions Silver Clouds has a good selection of tequillas. Supposedly they have inexpensive oysters ... 1/2 dozen for $4 until 9 pm.

Seems they even have a Sunday champagne brunch. Anyone tried that? I keep reading about the warm basket of croissants ... and ... ok, average food though it seems there was some slight change in the past few years.

Always thought it was Silver Cloud ... but it turns out the plural is correct.

You said the magic word --Tequila. Sounds like a nice place. I'll try to get to it while I'm in SF next week.

Really, this is a marginal place I'm guessing at best. The reason it seems to keep going is inexpensive strong drinks so that people can get plastered enough to bribe the kareoke dj so they can get up and sing badly. A pick-up bar where lines like "Are you a model?" are uttered. I really don't think the NY times showed the best judgement with the article.

Yet, you never know. The oysters are cheap. The brunch might be decent. I was curious to see if there was something redeeming about the place. There are probably a zillion better places for tequila in SF ... and singing. Unless someone lives in the city, or you hear some raves in this thread ... I wouldn't make a special trip ... but if you do ... please report back.

oh god ...the only thing missing in that description was low shirts, open collars and plenty of gold. I think I'll pass.
