New Capital Seafood: King crab, dungeoness crab, and shrimp special

Okay, I know not everyone is a big fan of this place, but when you've got fresh seafood and prices cheaper than buying it at the market and cooking it yourself, what's not to like? Plus, the food is pretty yummy. I'm not sure it's "gourmet" Chinese/Cantonese food, but it's pretty darn good.

They are having this special at New Capital Seafood on Garvey Ave by Del Mar Blvd. This location will only be open until April 20th, so they don't have that many live fishes and seafoods to pick from at this point. They will be moving to their new location where the old Sam Woo Dim Sum restaurant on the 3rd floor of the Focus/Del Mar Plaza used to be.

Anyhow, back to the food. They are having this special at New Capital: live king crabs for $3.99 a pound (usually these suckers are at least 10 pounds), live shrimp (the small ones, not the super size prawns) for 1 cent a pound, and live dungeoness crab for 1 cent a pound. You can only pick one of the three items, and you must spend at least $25, which is not hard, to get the special. I think there is also a limit on pounds and/or crabs depending on how many people you have in your party.

Not the less, I'm hoping they will continue the specials at the new Sam Woo location, as I will definitely be there!

Why cook at home?

Went to New Capital in Rowland about a week ago and enjoyed the 1 cent/pound shrimp. The shrimps were medium sized, fresh and tasty. We originally wanted the dungeness crab, but they were sold out. We skipped out on the king crab when they said it was about 10-15 pounds, but it looked liked we totally missed out. Every table around us was eating it and it looked delicious. Going back for that soon.

Long time reader, first time poster...I love this site. Thanks for all the great info chowhounders.

The King Crab is awesome....get the legs steamed with garlic and the body salt and peppered or cooked with honey and the spices.

I also went to new capital on Garvey and had the dungeoness crab. Unfortunately, they had run out of the King crab by the time we were seated. The dungeoness crab was good but I was really disappointed w/the rest of the food we ordered. I found another place on Valley Blvd in a mini mall east of Garfield that had a King crab special for 6.99lb but other items on the menu were muuuuch better. I can't remember the name of the place but it's next Wells Fargo. If you want to try it, I'll find out for you. I think it's behind Kono BBQ.

The place you mentioned is Top Island.

The New Capital on Garvey will move to the old Sam Woo location starting on April 20th.

Went to New Capital at the old Sam Woo location on Sunday for dinner. By around 6:00PM the place was packed. The special we got were the spot prawns for 99 cents per pound. We had 6 people so we got to order 2 pounds. I thought the food was good and the portions were decent sized. When the place is full, there are definitely not enough staff to go around.

I went to New Capital on Valley/Del Mar tonight...they didn't have the crab or regular shrimp deal...but they did have the 99 cent huge prawns deal if you order 28 dollars or more which was easy to do...but you can only get one pound for 99 cents...proba, ably because it was soooooooooooo crowded...food was good...ordered braised pork and taro clay pot which was really good and tried the walnut spare ribs (like walnut shrimp but with rib meat), beef with XO sauce, and a steam chicken...portions were pretty good sizes and fed 4 of us hungry guys...ended up costing 41 dollars...so it wasn't too bad....but really wanted the crab deal to be there..that what we all wanted..oh well...next time
