Unrefridgerated Wheat Germ

I just found an opened jar of wheat germ in my pantry. The jar says to refrigerate after opening, but it looks ok and smells fine. It is almost full, what should I do? How do I know if it is bad?

  1. It's fine. Under certain conditions wheat germ can become rancid if left out of the fridge, but (1) that's pretty unlikely, and (2) if it were rancid, you would smell it.

    Many, many things say "refrigerate after opening" that don't need to be refrigerated.
