Conejo Valley Chows?

  • 1

Howdy all. I'm a 21-year old from the Conejo Valley (woe is me) and fancy myself a burgeoning chow. However, this does not do well as I am of the younger sort and therefore tight on money... but I have to say thanks to elmomonster and chubbypanda for their fantastic blogs that I rely on everytime I go down to see my girlfriend in Westminster.

That being said... are there any good eats in the Ventura County that won't break my bank? I've tried a few places, but there isn't anything really stellar from what I have tried so far. I don't mind spending $20-$30, but beyond that is something I really don't want to test.

Notables--

Chester's Little Asia in Camarillo off Arneill. My dad is chummy with the guy who runs the place. They used to have pretty good Cantonese dishes but the quality has gone down as of late; I think one of their better chefs left.

Sushi Hamayu, next to the Habit in Camarillo off the 101... not sure what the chows here think of it but it seems pretty good, despite being usually empty. Give it a try, the lunch bento is pretty good and the fish is great.

Fuji Sushi in Simi Valley in the Mervyn's lot is my usual haunt; good fish and a comfy atmosphere make this one of my favorites. It's no Shibucho but this is where I usually go. Be warned though, if you are a diehard, the kami here is the old itamae (and he's young!) and all the itamae are Mexican (not that Mexicans can't make sushi, but some diehards...).

I was not impressed by Masa Sushi or Ozeki. Akio's is party fare but I wouldn't take a group smaller than 6. And I realize that I'm just rattling off Asian food, but I don't like chain food too much excepting Chipotle and all the other restaurants that seem to be around here just... are not good. DuPars is not my fare, Eggs and Things in both Camarillo and TO took a nosedive in quality, and Simi Valley doesn't have anything worthwhile except for Fuji and MAYBE The Hat.

  1. Goletto's in Westlake and Cafe 14 in Agoura are two of my favorite. Both not entirely cheap, but well worth it. Try the mushroom risotto at Goletto's... there is a surprise to be had! I just can’t recommend that place enough! Café Provencal has a small prix fix dinner available on wed and thur for only $45 with wine. But I don’t know if anyone else has noticed this but it seems like their consistency has been faltering a bit.
