"Rubin Caslow, a titan of smoked fish who for half a century paved America with salmon, whitefish and herring, died on Sunday at his home in Roslyn, N.Y. He was 86.

)For decades, Mr. Caslow presided over the Acme Smoked Fish Corporation, a family-owned concern now in its fourth generation. Located in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, the company also has offices in Philadelphia and Los Angeles and is the country’s largest producer and distributor of smoked fish, Robert Caslow said.

Acme’s wares can be found under countermen’s knives at fabled New York food shops, among them Zabar’s, Russ & Daughters, Barney Greengrass, Citarella and Fairway. The company also supplies vacuum-packed fish to stores throughout the United States, including Costco and many supermarkets. The public can buy fish at the company’s retail outlet in Brooklyn on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m."
