Summer trip

My wife and I, both foodies from DC, are coming to N.O. for a long weekend (actually June 30 to July 4). We love the heat. Have not been since 2003. We want to volunteer somewhere, for part of the time, to help rebuild, so any suggestions there would be appreciated. We will be staying Uptown, and will have a car. But where to eat? We love seafood, love the out of the way places. Went to Jacques Imo's and Brigstens the last time we were there. Should we go back? What other places should we try? Thanks!

    1. I would definitely try Dick and Jenny's, Clancy's, Cochon, Herbsaint or Upperline. D and J's is my favorite. For an all out creole meal, I would reccomend Galatoire's above all...and 25 cent martinis at Commander's Palace for lunch.

On the cheaper end, Parasols's, Joey K's or Domilese's.

A great wine and cheese night (for a low price) can be spent at Sip or St. James Cheese Company.

I lived in DC for a year...I am missing all of those exotic ethnic foods in Adams Morgan!

        1. This site has a pretty comprehensive list of volunteer opps:

I know the episcopal diocese has lots of diverse opportunities, and of course there's always habitat for humanity.

I agree with the suggestions above, also uptown, consider Lilette, or a sort of new place, Iris, not too far from Jacque-Imo's. Crepe Nanou is always a fun night, also. If you enjoyed J-I's, Crabby Jack's would be great for lunch. Mandina's is a slice of New Orleans, and right around the corner from Angelo Brocato's for dessert.

            1. While both of the restaurants you've been to are excellent choices, I would also recommend trying Iris for dinner. The chef, Ian Schnoebelen, won Food & Wine Magazine's 2007 Best New Chef Award. The seafood there is great well. You can see an interview with Ian at Iris in the link below as well as some of the dishes at the restaurant.
