Great Cubano at Charo's Bakery in Lowell
I must have walked or driven by this place literally thousands of times and never went inside, I had noticed a sign for cuban sandwiches, but never gave it a shot until yesterday, boy am I glad I did! The place is a tiny bakery on the corner of Merrimack and Palmer in downtown Lowell, only about 8 seats and a case with cakes, pastries, etc. For hot food they serve a few sandwiches, chicken fingers, pastelillos, etc. Pretty typical spanish bakery snacks. But that cubano was unreal: a nice fresh, toasted, sub roll, lots of juicy, tender, roast pork, ham, cheese, and pickle. The sandwich came cut in half and I was full after the first half, the whole sandwich must have weighed over a pound. It came with chips and a drink for $8.00, not super cheap but easily two lunches and excellent quality. I can't wait to go back and try some other stuff there. The cakes and pastries looked great as well, huge slices of carrot and chocolate cake, tres leches, and bread pudding.

I've been by this place a million times too, thanks. Have to stop next time. I always look in the window. Have you been to the Life Alive health food place on the next street (middle street)? Really great flavors? Always feel like I did something good for my body when I've eaten there. :-) I ran a health food lunch counter (sort of by accident) back in Lousianna some years ago and loved it - always search out a good health food restaurant.
I go to Life Alive for juice and smoothies fairly often. They are all pretty awesome, esp. the ginger crush, and love alive. I have only had food there a couple of times, I thought it was ok, certainly healthy, if not the tastiest I have ever had. Heidi, the owner is wicked nice, also a good place to get organic supplements, beauty products, etc.
