  1. What's happening? A new opening? Is this a chain? Just wondering, since I live near by.

From what I recall, Bulgarini is operated by a couple from Europe who sold amazing gelatos from a cart at the Norton Simon Museum (I think) in Pasadena. The reputation of this gelato started picking up some serious buzz - enough for J. Gold to seek it out for a write-up. He did give it alot of praise, and I am guessing the rest is history...

leo and elizabeth have been working on this space for a long time. it used to be a horrible BBQ place. it's across from nancy's pastries (avoid).

they were not at the norton simon, they were at the pacific asia, yes in pasadena. leo is from rome, but elizabeth is a native from pasadena/altadena.

Thanks - my blurb was totally off of my recollection of reading J. Gold's article from back in... hey - I gave it a shot... One Bite seemed to be left out there hanging in anticipation - wanted to offer a "taste."

          1. re: bulavinaka

Thanks! I can't wait to try it!

Although my info wasn't completely accurate, I just couldn't get no one was responding to your inquiry. I just felt that I had to at least throw you a bone... I'm trying to build a short intinerary so I have an excuse to go out there and try this master's creations... Maybe lunch in Arcadia, Descanso Gardens to burn off lunch, then total abandon at Bulgarini to pack it back on...

          2. re: revets2

Now I understand where you are talking about. I ate that that BBQ place (once).

            Cool.

      2. 749 Altadena Drive, just east of Lake? Are they moving in permanently?

        That would be pretty cool...

this is an actual storefront location, so permanent basically.

          1. re: kevin

Kevin, this is great news. I'm glad that Bulgarini is opening a store of its own, that will be open to the public. The only time I have eaten their gelato is at the Laemmle Playhouse 7, and I haven't been able to do that without seeing a movie. Someone on Chowhound mentioned that they just go in to the theatre to buy the gelato, but I haven't tried that.

pick up a copy of the times today or check online,

there's an extensive article on gelato/ice cream in la.

              1. re: kevin

Thanks, Kevin. I just read it. I wish they included frozen yogurt in there.

                1. re: katkoupai

leo would rather commit stab himself with an ice pick, i i think. he's a purist.

                  1. re: revets2

LoL..probably, but I think katkoupai wished the article included fro-yo options.

                    1. re: chica

Yes, I meant the article, not Bulgarini. :-)

        2. Bulgarini gelato freakin' rocks. It was enough to drag me to Pasadena. Looks like a trip to Alta Dena is in my future.

          1. note this is EAST Altadena Drive, not North Altadena Drive.

            1. Is it open now? The LA Times article said that it opened 11 days ago, but another link said the grand opening is this Saturday.

just spoke to elizabeth. she's actually turning away customers as they are not officially open and she is busy making gelati.

                go saturday.

                1. re: revets2

                  Tomorrow, 12PM-8PM, right?

                  1. re: revets2

I'm sure the two realize by now that they are no longer the best kept gelato secret in So Cal... The best of luck to them!

                2. The place is excellent. The owner, Leo, is a good guy and his gelato is first class. If you have time, make it a point to check it out.

                  1. i just went this weekend and had the pistachio. the chocolate with cinnamon was also very tasty, but the pistachio was sublime... not too sweet and excellent mouth feel.

i also had a piece of marzipan, which was the best i've had in a while. i'm sick of people making fruit out of like 90% sugar with just a little almond and calling it marzipan. the stuff they have at bulgarini is the real deal.
