Clean graphics and great think-ahead search engine:

The content's dubious. Cleanscores gives Tu Lan 100; the SF health department gives it a 74.

It also could be the sfdph data that's peculiar. The dph's own website says:

"After conducting an inspection of your facility, the Health Inspector will calculate a score based on the violations observed.... "

The Tu Lan record you linked to says:

"This location has no violations"

It's possible the sfdph verifies that past violations were abated but does not recalculate scores until after the next round of routine inspections, and that cleanscores is doing its own number crunching on this.

I've spent enough time vetting puplic sector data sources to know that sfdph wouldn't be the first to put out data that's tardy and/or inaccurate.

The SF sites says Tu Lan's last inspection was 8/15/2005 (likely out of date).

Cleanscores says "no previous inspections," which is wrong. I suspect they just default to 100 / no previous inspections when they lack data.

Here's what a real 100 looks like:

So what does "no violations" mean to you? Are you saying that sfdph is wrong too?

Anyway, cleanscores is just a tool, with limitations like any other tool. No need to pick a fight over it (but you did manage to polish the halo of your favorite restaurant).

Personally, I don't see fastidiousness as a major criterion for choosing where to eat. The cleanest kitchen I ever ate from was probably a hospital's; the dirtiest was probably my own, but the food tasted better.

When I checked the sfdph.org site a few months ago it included the details of the violations that gave it the 74 score.

Some of the rodent-related high-risk violations might put me off a place, but when a place is that sloppy, sooner or later the health department cracks down hard and the owners have to clean things up or shut down.

Robert & Gary,
My name is Guy Michlin and I'm the Co-founder of CleanScores.
First, I want to thank you for using our service.
Second, I wanted to let you know that data accuracy is our first priority and that's why we are recalculating all the scores on the SF website based on the violations each location got (in other words, if a location got 2 violations each worth 10 points we give the place a score of 80). In this case, since there are no violations the place received a score of a 100 on our website. That being said we are double checking with SF health department to make sure the violations weren't omitted by mistake. Once we get an answer I'll let you know.

Best,
Guy

Hi again,
Just to let you know that we have checked with the SF HD and it turned out that the problem was on their side - for some reason the violations didn't appear on their website and that's why we gave the place a 100 score. Anyway, it's fixed now.
You might find small differences in the scores between the SF website and ours; that's because, as I mentioned before, we are recalculating the scores according to the point deduction for each violation.

Best,
Guy

Gary, I'm going to quote you about hospital kitchens versus my own. (From my computer, I glance at the cat sitting on the kitchen counter, awaiting his dinner.)
