Minetta tavern

I have friends that want to go to the Minetta tavern in the village and I have not been here. Can anybody tell me if this is a good spot to bring friends? . I know it has been around for a long time. Atmosphere? Food?, Price?, thanks traumachef

  1. The atmosphere is heavily old New York: the walls are lined with caricatures of former patrons, and there's a secluded back room. As for the food, keep it simple - pasta - and don't expect miracles.

I would second the "old new york" atmosphere, was here a few weeks ago and found it very cozy and inviting on a rainy, dreary night.

    2. I agree with the other posters about the atmosphere at Minetta. It's a living piece of Old New York, the 1940s brought back to life. Scenes from the movie "Joe Gould's Secret" were filmed there, a perfect choice since that's where they actually occured. It's like a film set from 60 years ago. If that type of thing appeals to you and your friends, you should go. If you're looking for cutting edge or trendy, look elsewhere.

The food can range from OK to very good. I've enjoyed various pastas and their chicken piccante. My one seriously subpar meal came when I was with a group and we overwhelmed the kitchen.

      Menu here -

Ah, Minetta. Fond memories from the seventies when I was going to NYU law school. But I think the best part is the bar, the dining room is sort of uninspired. How about having a drink there first and going somewhere else for dinner?

        1. i've always had good meals at minetta - have not been there for a while, but the pasta was always prefectly cooked and good.

Thanks for the posts, I might start at the bar and decide after that, but I will check it out.
