AppleTree produce market in West Hartford

AppleTree is on New Park Avenue in West Hartford, across from the BJ's/Home Depot area, in the same shopping center as Dollar Tree and Raymour & Flannigan. Not sure of their hours.

I was out this past Saturday running errands and I stopped into AppleTree for the first time. I'd actually seen it from the road, as the storefront read "Retail/Wholesale Fish, Fruits & Vegetables". I just HAD to stop in.

It's an indoor produce market/grocery store. It's an unassuming place, with no frills, no bells and whistles. But I don't care - I'm a chowhound on a mission. I was amazed at the vast amounts of produce - just about everything you can imagine, and then some. Everything was very fresh and laid out in large quantities, and most things are sold by the pound (rolls of plastic bag hang from the ceiling!). They also have tubs of nuts and snack mixes, a section of ethnic items & sauces, a large fresh fish counter at the back, etc. There were some people casually shopping, and some others with large boxes that were obviously stocking up for a restaurant.

Prices were very inexpensive!! I found that most items are much cheaper than the grocery stores, although a few things not so much. I emerged victorious from AppleTree with 5 bags full with lots of apples, zucchini, about a dozen tomatoes, onions, garlic bulbs, cilantro, basil, oranges, a pineapple, pecans, potatoes, green tea & rice snacks for $27. I thought it was a great deal for the quantity. I'm definitely not buying crappy, overpriced Stop n Shop produce anymore.

  1. Great write-up! We love Apple Tree. The only problem I noticed is that there is no apparent organic produce. Other than that, I agree very much with your review.
