I just looked at the website and they have a new product "Salametto Piccante" (http://store.framani.com/21sal6.html). Has anyone tried them? If so what's the verdict? I also noticed that the on-line prices have gone up....

Yes, this is their dry chorizo. I saw it today at Cow Girl Creamery at the Ferry Plaza & bought some. I'll report back after sampling. BTW, those on-line prices are absurd!

I have had their dry chorizo and it was excellent - good bit of cumin flavor as well. Even kept it in the fridge for a while and it held up very well.

Saw it this morning at the Berkeley Bowl; $5.99 for a small paper-wrapped package containing what felt like two small pieces. Price resistance set in (though I'm sure the price at the Bowl is less than at Cowgirl), but I'll be interested in Paul's report.

Paul H: The prices aren't cheap, but they do include shipping/handling. It's actually a pretty square deal -- I think it works out to about $22 per lb. -- the same as Pasta Shop in Berkeley. But I guess if you live near a store that carries their salumi, it wouldn't make much sense to order online -- but if you live out of the area it works out.

The online price is $58 for three 7-8 oz. salametti, which works out to $36 to $44 a pound.

I agree that they are way over the top with the on-line prices...few months ago the "Salametto Trio" was $52 or $54...now it's $60. What is even more pricy are their fresh sausages...$14/lb (10 lb order) or ~$19/lb for 5 lb orders.....nuts....I have tried both versions of the "Italian Sausgae" and yes they are good but not that good. I have seen "Salameto" and "Gentile" products around the Bay Area going for $13.99 to 16.99 a pound....

So has anyone tried the "Salametto Picante"?

I picked one up at the Bowl, $7 for a 7-ounce salametto. It's mellow, gamy, garlicky, not very spicy by my standards, tastes like maybe a mix of paprika, black peper, and chile. Very good.

The crazy online prices are probably to avoid any hint of competing with their wholesale customers.
