My seven year old loves Alice's Teacup, on the UWS (there is another branch on the UES but we haven't been there). Funky basement with Alice in Wonderland murals, surprisingly good lunch/brunch food and pastries. Some waitresses sport fairy wings and glitter. A fun place and the antithesis of corporate theme restaurants.

^^ Those are really good choices. I'd add just a few more:
1. Vinyl (locations in the upper west side and hell's kitchen). It has pretty decent basic diner fare and Thai offerings if she wants to stretch her palate just a little bit.
2. Empanadas are a fun (and inexpensive) option. You could try Flor's Kitchen (W. Village) or Empanada Mama (Hell's Kitchen) for these. (There's a third, well-known option, but I can't think of the name right now... Ruben's Empanadas?)
3. Falafel -- even less expensive and maybe more fun! I think falafel is pretty accessible, even for a "country girl." (Was for me!) There's a strip on Macdougal St. with three or four different falafel places. Mamoun's Falafel is a classic, a veritable Village institution, and still only $2 a falafel sandwich after all these years. It's not much of a sit down place. Since the weather'll probably be nice during your visit, get it to go and eat it outside in Washington^2 Park.
4. If you're in the W. Village on a weekday, there's a very cute dosai stand on the south side of Washington^2 Park. You'll probably see a line. This might be a more adventurous choice, but if she's up for something new, I highly recommend it.
5. In general, street food is loads of fun. There's good stuff EVERYWHERE you look (tho I would personally avoid the ubiquitous hot dog, pretzel, and nut stands).
Hope you have a great time! And please let us know if you have any more specific criteria -- maybe the part of town you'd rather spend most of your time in. As RGR noted, there are sooo many great places in NYC that it's hard to know where to start without a narrower point of reference.

If she likes America Girl dolls, a meal at the American Girl Cafe would be a real treat. She can bring her own doll or they have loaners. So what if there food isn't great. If the girl likes the dolls, it's a memorable experience. Make a reservation in advance.

You could have lunch or dinner ar Cowgirl on West 10th and Hudson--a lot of fun for kids and adults with good, hearty food. You an walk around the West Village--really a beautiful place. At one point, make sure you go to Serendipity in the East 60's for an ice cream sundae--a very "New York" rite of passage. Enjoy our wonderful city!
p.s. Just remembered Dylans Candy Store--it's on the Upper East Side somewhere. A great candy store owned by Ralph Lauren's daughter that is a real treat--visually as well as tasty.
Again--enjoy!›2 Replies-

Dylan's is on the corner of 60th and Third Ave, and Serendipity is on 60th between Second and Third Ave, half a block down from Dylan's. At Serendipity I'd go for a frozen hot chocolate rather than a sundae! hahaha. Then for the grown-ups, cross to the other side of the street and explore Bloomingdale's.

In order to make appropriate suggestions, it would be helpful to have a few specifics. Where are you coming from? Have you been to NYC before? If so, what kind of food experiences did you have? What kinds of cuisines do you and your granddaughter prefer? Do you want to keep things casual, or would you like to introduce her to something a little fancier and more sophisticated? Give us a per person dinner budget, and tell us if that figure includes alcoholic beverages (for you, of course), tax (nearly 9%), and tip (20%).
