Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in the SF Bay Area (including Berkeley, Oakland, Napa, Sonoma, Marin, and San Jose)

30th bday dinner for approx 10?

Any suggestions for a place we can have a semi-private birthday celebration in SF?
Classy girl, eats anything, will be 2 weeks post-partum with her 2nd child. She'll be tired and she doesn't want to think about her birthday--but we want to plan something for her.

Pricey is okay. Type of food is open. Location in the city also open.

Ideas?

  1. Foreign Cinema? They have a lovely patio area that looks pretty secluded. I heard that they rent out their art gallery for private parties as well.

    1. we went to circa with a group of 10...our reservation was early...like 6:30...and it was perfect b/c we could still hear each other before the huge trendy bar rush came in around 9. and the food was great! pricey drinks, but great food!

      1. Kokkari and Slanted Door both have private rooms that would be good...

        1. I had a bday dinner there and it was great.

          1. Ooh, great ideas! Thanks

            1. Pricey but well worth it is Boulette's Larder in the Ferry Building, available for private parties in the evening. It is an intimate setting, fireplace in the dining area, gracious service, amazing food, etc etc etc. Since the whole place is closed except the private dining area, you can make it as casual or formal an occasion as you want. I went here for a 50th birthday party for a friend of mine last year and it was the best B-day party I've ever attended. They catered the menu specifically to the tastes of the birthday girl, including a surprise birthday cake based on three of her favorite ingredients!

              1. A16 has a beautiful glass enclosed area in the back that should hold 10 comfortably. It's private but still part of the restaurant. And the Italian food is outstanding. It got a James Beard nomination - one of our favorites!
