Vegemite Hunt!

SmittyT Apr 4, 2007 03:06 PM

Has anyone seen vegemite recently in any stores?

It is nearly impossible to find anywhere - stores are having a difficult time getting it through customs because the US decided it doesn't like that it has "added folate". Apparently, they think only cereals and breads should have added folate. The Customs & Border Protection denies there is a ban but every store I've spoken to has not been able to get it into the country. Has ANYONE seen it in any stores?

Any Australian vegemite-loving ex-pats or child of australians (me) knows my need for it.

I need my breakfast food!

And no, Marmite will not do.

Unfortunately, ordering it online is prohibitively expensive ($30+ for a $5 jar o' food) and all the places currently have it listed as "out of stock" because of the customs probs. Sigh.

I'm pretty sure they have it at Tuck Shop (1st and 1st). I bought some Tim Tams there last weekend and could've sworn I saw some jars of vegemite for sale. Try their fresh meat pies too.

I was there maybe a month ago and they don't even sell their vegemite sandwiches anymore. maybe they've restarted again though.

I'd be surprised if they didn't have it at the little general store part of Tea & Sympathy in the West Village.

I would doubt it as they're British. Prob only Marmite.

There are a bunch of bodegas in the East Village that sell it... my boyfriend is an Aussie. While I don't know the names of them, there's one on 2nd Avenue and 9th street and one on 1st Avenue and 3rd Street.

Just FYI, Kraft decided to stop importing vegemite, which is why you can no longer find it in the US.
