Has anyone heard of this bakery? Any experience with their cakes, pastries? As said on previous post, will need a very large custom designed birthday cake in the fall and it seems very hard to find a good bakery in Bergen/Hudson counties-

If not a good place, any suggestions? Ok with going into Passaic, Morris and if necessary, Rockland (is that the one that has Suffern and Nanuet?) -

Thanks!

Carlo's is fabulous. We had a surprise party for my grandmother last year and went there for the cake. They will honeslty do ANYTHING that you want. They've done a lot of celebrity cakes as well. When you go there, you can look through the book and see everything. Its quite unbelievable. The cake itself is really awesome as well! Probably one of the best that i've had. I've only had a few of their pastries, but they were also amazing. People line up to get them, and they are sold out almost immediately.
Overall they do a fabulous job, and for an elaborate custom cake, that is probably your best bet in the area!

We ordered a birthday cake from Carlo's for a child's birthday last weekend because we wanted one with a scanned picture on top. (I'm usually the cake baker.) And I think Carlos is good for a certain old-fashioned neighborhood bakery-style, frosting roses, buttercream made with shortening kind of cake. They don't do cakes that use premium ingredients. But they are fresh and tasty. You have time to sample.
Black Hound http://blackhoundny.com has a store in the Short Hills Mall. I think their cakes are wonderful.

Don't know whether they still do it but Carlo's used to do something they called an "Italian birthday cake"—had sort of a tiramisu feel to it. Definitely not your average bakery bday cake with rosettes.

First, Carlo's is not your average bakery AT ALL. they ahve done a TON of celebrity cakes. So maybe what you got was basic, but they are definitely not that. When i went to pick up the cake that I got from there I saw some unbelieveable things!
Secondly, I don't know when the last time you went to black hound was, but they haven't been in the Short Hills Mall for like a year now! Its unfortunate because they were amazing!

What flavor is a celebrity cake?
Sorry to hear about BH no longer having any NJ presence. I have only gotten cakes from the New York City location. My comment "basic" referred to the choices available for cake flavors. I think they are good at what they do, but are not in the same league as, or are really trying to compete with a bakery like Black Hound (for example).

by celebrity cake i mean ones that are made for celebrities. so they can be whatever you want them to be! i was just using that as an example of how good they are. of course they are not in the same league as BH. Those two types of bakeries are COMPLETELY different. I would to go to black hound for something gourmet, but for a special birthday cake, i would absolutely go to carlos.
