[Groton, MA] Seeking feedback on Gibbet Hill Grill

Have you been there? What is the price range?

I've had good and bad experiences here, and good and bad seating locations to boot. The wine list is a little too big and a little too all over the place, but the grilled cheese appetizers are my favorite. My favorite entree was a butternut squash dish that, of course, they no longer serve. I've also enjoyed the hamburger, but not the look of disgust on the server's face over my choice of a cheaper menu option (not due to price, just because I was craving one).

Agree that it has had it's ups and downs... the place became better once they got the kinks out. Even so, we find the views still better than the food. Would go there if in the area, but not a special trip. The bar is fun to sit at until the crush at the hostess desk becomes unbearable. The locals seem to flock there like lemmings.
      Re: the server's look.
NO waiter/waitress should have "attitude" when a customer orders..that is such bad form!

Gorgeous setting, no doubt. My experiences, though, have been so-so. The food I've eaten here has been pretty standard fare, nothing exciting. Maybe you don't go to a grill for exciting fare, true, but for the prices I expect everything to at least be perfectly prepared. That hasn't always been the case. Once, for example, my mother-in-law ordered an appetizer that, when it came, was cold and had clearly been made very far ahead of time (like, the day before). I forget exactly what it was but that was disappointing.

I'm an alum of Lawrence Academy (right across the street) and this is always a convenient gathering place at reunion time. If my spouse and I are considering going out to eat on our own, though, we no longer give much thought to going here. In my opinion, for the same price much better food can be had elsewhere.

          lescaret,

Since there isn't much in the area, where do like better?

We mostly head to Nashua, but love having something only a few miles away. Now we only go to Gibbet every few months or so, as we don't like having to do reservations, as we are more of the go out when we can without planning type.

You're right, there isn't much in the area. However, in Groton on Main St. is Fihlo's. It's nothing like the Grill, of course, doesn't really constitute a "fine dining" experience because it's more than 1/2 take out. BUT, they do have some tables you can eat at (after ordering at the counter) and you can buy your own wine at the adjacent package store. The thing is, the food is dependably delicious, in generous portions. Fresh ingredients, made on the premises, just over all a fine option when you want good food but are stranded in the Groton/Ayer/Pepperell/Townsend/Shirley area.

Our other option, given that we live in Leominster, is the Monument Grill (downtown Leominster). It, too, is dependable, more so, I'd venture to say, than Gibbett Hill.

We live in Pepperell, have only done Fihlo's for lunch with friends.- very good.

Due to husband's hours it just dosen't work for us. It is always packed in the evening when we possibly want to go.

However, we have rediscovered Lucia Travola in Brookline NH. We had a not so good experience when it first opened, and just wrote it off. Then went back a few months ago, now love it.

We do go early, when they first open on Saturday or Sunday.

Also love Cucina Toscana in Nashua.

May have to try the Monumet - just never venture out that way much anymore.

If you can request and get a table in the loft area, it's really nice!
