Any recommendations on where I can find real hash browns? No home fries... I'm looking for the authentic, shredded potatoes - crisp on the outside... Maybe it's more of a mid-west thing, but they seem harder to find out here, and I need them!

thanks,

i can't wait to hear the responses to this! amen heather, home fries (while good in their own way) are not hash browns. i don't think it's a mid-west thing; i've never been there and i too crave true hash browns. where are they, folks?

The Pork Store Cafe, for sure the branch on Haight and I am pretty sure the one on 16th St. too, serves them up.

I don't think most restaurants (or hash joints) consider the description "hash browns" to apply only to shredded potatoes. More likely you will get diced, cooked potatoes sauteed in oil or butter. The crispy shredded potatoes are hard to find...and when you do find them they are awful (like Denny's). I think one of the problems is the impatience of cooks who undercook the potatoes.

Hard Knox Cafe on third street...here is a link to my report. Some others have been less than enthused about other items on the menu, although I've liked all the breakfast dishes I've had there. Nonetheless, if it is real (and delicious) hash browns you want, you can get them at Hard Knox!

One warning: I recently tried to go on a Sunday morning and discovered that they don't open till 11, so more of a brunch spot than a breakfast spot. Hard Knox is also an excellent choice for a pre-Giants game early lunch/brunch, particularly for those coming from my neck of the wooods (Bernal/Glen Park/Bayshore).

Scone Henge on Shattuck in Berkeley (a block past the Shattuck/Adeline split has them. I dont' care about them that much so i don't know if they're really good. They certainly aren't uncooked in the middle the way some places make them (yeuch)

Scone Henge also serves a really good chile verde burrito. Good for breakfast with a good cuppa. It's huge, though...2 people could share it.

these are getting harder to find, having been replaced by home fries or fancy shmancy roasted potatoes with herbs. while i will certainly eat those kinds, hash browns are my favorite. You can get decent ones at Al's Good Foods in the Mission and Pork Store Cafe (16th location or the one in the Haight!) Surprisingly, I've had pretty good ones at Taylor's Cafe which is in the Diamond Heights Safeway mini mall. Not a place to go out of your way for, but they have a short order cook there and puts out very good food, breakfast, sandwiches, mexican!
