Madeline Bistro in Tarzana is an excellent vegan restaurant and i know some of their desserts feature vegan ice cream.

Close to the corner of Melrose & Vermont (on Heliotrope actually) is a pretty good gelato place called Scoops. It's been mentioned here before, just do a search for it. They have regular gelato as well as vegan choices. I went with the BF the other night and he seemed to like it.

I second Scoops. There are at least 3 or 4 vegan flavors available at any given time, and they're usually very creative flavors.

Third on Scoops, and Boule Bakery on La Cienega, which has amazing ice cream, usually has a vegan offering.

"...and they're usually very creative flavors."

That's an understatement. I love Scoops but ALL of Tak's flavors are creative, so creative that it's hard to find flavors that appeal to kids who usually like the familiar! No vanilla, no chocolate, nothing conventional! My favorite so far has been the Chocolate Wasabi! Or was it the Champagne w/Thai Basil?

Fourth on Scoops. I am not even close to Vegan and sometimes I prefer the vegan flavors to his regular ones. Good sorbets too.

i second (or third or whatever it is at this point) scoops for vegan gelato.

as for food, i'm a fan of cafe M on melrose near la brea. aside from a few items with fish (salmon), i believe it is all vegan.

i don't recommend it as highly, but real food daily (two locations -- santa monica and west hollywood) is ok. i believe it's purely vegan.

m cafe de chaya is macrobiotic, not exclusively vegan (although there are vegan options on the menu)

Are you going to the Bay area at all? There are some great options up there (Maggie Mudd, and some gelato shop in Berkeley that has a ton of soy gelato options).

Also, on a more LA related note, Pazzo Gelato in Silver Lake has sorbets, though not as many as in the summertime. I believe that most of their sorbets are vegan, though an employee told me once that some of them have a small amount of dairy - had a hard time getting straight answers. And there's a gelato place in Pasadena, near the Laemmele in Old Town that has vegan sorbet and even a vanilla soy gelato.

The Berkeley place is Gelateria Naia.

I should point out that while Scoops easily has the best vegan ice cream, the shop is not even vegetarian. (I really enjoyed his vegan heffeweizen-lemon a few days ago).

Apparently he made fois gras ice cream last week though I unfortunately didn't get to try it.

They had a bacon one recently too - I think caramel bacon maybe.
