Dinner with Mom in Hermosa Beach

For my mom's 60th birthday, we're spending a night at the Beach House in Hermosa Beach, getting massages, the whole girls' weekend thing. We're looking for a restaurant for dinner that night. I tried a search on this board but could find nothing definitive. Ideally, it should be close to the hotel at The Strand at 13th. I'd rather walk than drive. Mom's sophisticated, so we can go more upscale, and I'd like to make it someplace nice that would befit a birthday dinner (but not too pricey). Any kind of food. Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hermosa Beach is not a upscale kind of place so while you can get decent, and even very good food, you might have to settle for a rather ordinary looking restaurant. That said, I recommend Chef Melba's. It is within walking distance and the food is great. It is also not a young, hip, loud kind of restaurant that is seen on Pier Avenue where your Mother might feel a bit out of place. You must make a reservation as it is quite small. Not really within walking distance is La Sosta (Italian) which is expensive but worthy of a celebration. I think it is very authentic and absolutely delicious. Service was really amazing even though we were not dressed nicely and had no reservations as we stopped in the first time (with our 14 year old) on the spur of the moment. We were treated like we were their most important customers. Reservations are also a must.

I concure with both suggestions, although I have had recent bad experiences at La Sosta-slow kitchen and lack of service. i think the partners were fighting. The food is very very good. Melba's is my fav restaurant right now in a town that lacks good restaurants -it's a gem. I love the atmosphere-fab food created by a friendly and unpretentious chef. Jacksons Bistro on Upper Pier Ave may be worthwhile too as well as the French Crepe place (forgot name) across the street. I have had great breakfasts and lunches there. Scotty's on The Strand is also a good spot to stop for breakfast and a short walk from your hotel.

      Have a great time

Thanks for this info. I too am planning a celebration weekend at the Beach House and would love ideas for a really great birthday dinner for a party of 5. We could drive a bit, but would prefer to stay local (i.e., not go all the way to LA). Is La Sosta the best option for a celebration meal?

        Thanks.

Birdo, I personally like the Chef Melba choice and Jacksons over La Sosta. That spot has changed hands 4 or 5 time over the last 10 years, never had a good meal at any of them.. With that being said, Chez Melange, Christines, Flemmings (chain but wanted to let you know one is close by in El Segundo) Coccole, are other South Bay spots. Google them and check them out or on this site as well..

Since March, I visited Coccole for first time and was very impressed. Liked it more than La Sosta. If you wanted to drive a bit farther, I recommend Cafe Piguini (or Pinguini) in Playa Del Rey. One of my favorite Italian restaurants and very lovely for a celebration.
In walking distance, I think Melba's is still best choice for food. There are a few other places within walking distance-Mediterraneo (sp) at the top of Pier Plaza,On Hermosa Ave- Cafe Boogaloo for live music and N'Orleans style food is very good fun. There is a place called Shore (?) fairly new and I have never been. One of my very fav places is called Japanica (sp is terrible today!) in Redondo Beach on PCH. They serve interesting sushi and Japanese dishes in a sophisticated and somewhat hip setting-seating is semi private and comfortable-good for a group of 5.

I haven't tried Chef Melbas yet (but will now). I had a good experience at La Sosta. I do want to suggest (though a chain) Chart House. The steaks are consistent, the salad bar is good, but it is the view that makes it truely memorable. I love watching the sunset there. Also, I haven't tried Baleen yet at the Portofino Hotel, but have heard good things. Anyone else?
