Charlotte - Taverna 100 Review

Since I couldn't find any reviews of this place before going, I thought I would post my impressions of dinner there last night.

First off, we chose Taverna 100 because we were attending a lecture at Belk Theatre and it was in the same building. I know Sonoma is there too, which I have seen positive reviews of, but as it was a late Tuesday night supper, we were trying to be more conservative with our dining dollars.

The space was just fine and with our reservations (for a party of six) we got a really nice roomy table. Even though the dining room suffered a sudden crunch as the lecture ended, we had good attentive service all evening.

I was not overly excited by the menu. It is described as Mediterranean fare, but many things seemed far too 'heavy' for my idea of Mediterranean. Though they are still working with winter ingredients, so that may be why and I don't count it against them. None of the apps seemed terribly appealing to me, so I just eeny-meeny-miny-moed myself a grilled asparagus salad. I chose the scallops for dinner. The salad was tasty and good for the season. I'm not sure it earned the $8 price tag though. The scallops were a $20 plate, which I find reasonable in most cases. These were 'flame-cooked' (I think that was their term) and served with parsnips and micro greens. I did appreciate the seasonality of the dish, but the scallops I did not really like at all. They had a very fishy taste and were a little tough. My husband, who had the lamb was equally dismayed by his entree. Lucky that we had good company to balance things out.

Dessert was actually free with our ticket stubs from the lecture, so that was a bonus, and most of our party ordered the Chocolate Oblivion torte, which was described as very rich and good. I requested the homemade ice cream combo, but was informed that all they had left was vanilla, so I tried the walnut spice cake, which was okay, but a little dry. The coffee (Counter Culture, out of Durham) was really really good.

So overall, I'm giving this place a thumbs-down and wouldn't go there again on my own volition. Maybe just for coffee and dessert after the theatre.
